TITLE: Microbial Symbionts from the Endostyle Region of the Ascidiella aspersa (Sea Squirt) capable of metabolizing iodine?

چکیده

Tunicates (sea squirt) are filter feeders which process liters of sea water daily. They have a preemptive organelle similar to the vertebrate thyroid called an endostyle. The endostyle has been identified as site for iodine metabolism. Our hypothesis was that microbial symbionts associated with endostyle play a role in iodine metabolism. Using Ascidiella aspersa (sea squirt) as the model, we have identified Endozoicomonas ascidiicola as a dominant symbiont of the endostyle and its surrounding tissues. We have found that the mucus secreted by the endostyle in the bronchial sac has an acidic pH providing a unique microbial environment. Indirect evidence from fluorescent microscopy suggest the Endozoicomons are present in tissue and not in the mucus layer and warrant further investigation.

Endozoicomonas Are Specific, Facultative Symbionts of Sea Squirts

Ascidians are marine filter feeders and harbor diverse microbiota that can exhibit a high degree of host-specificity. Pharyngeal samples of Scandinavian and Mediterranean ascidians were screened for consistently associated bacteria by culture-dependent and -independent approaches. Representatives of the Endozoicomonas (Gammaproteobacteria, Hahellaceae) clade were detected in the ascidian specie...

The effects of fenvalerate on hepatic and cerebral xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes in selenium and/or iodine deficient rats

Objective(s): Particularly in developing countries, selenium and/or iodine deficiencies are encountered and use of pesticides in agriculture are not well-controlled. Fenvalerate is a pyrethroid insectide used in agriculture and has applications against a wide range of pests. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of fenvalerate on hepatic and cerebral xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme act...

Molecular and morphological discrimination between an invasive ascidian, Ascidiella aspersa, and its congener A. scabra (Urochordata: Ascidiacea).

The solitary ascidian Ascidiella aspersa (Müller, 1776) has sometimes been regarded as conspecific with A. scabra (Müller, 1776), although previous detailed morphological comparisons have indicated that the two are distinguishable by internal structures. Resolution of this taxonomic issue is important because A. aspersa has been known as a notoriously invasive ascidian, doing much damage to aqu...

The Localization of Organically Bound Iodine in the Endostyle of Amphioxus

Recent work has done much to strengthen, from a functional aspect, the classical view that the thyroid gland of vertebrates is homologous with the endostyle of the protochordates (Barrington & Franchi, 1956a), for the presence of organically bound· iodine has been detected in the latter organ, both in Ciona and in other ascidians (Barrington, 1957 and unpublished work) and in Amphioxus (Thomas,...

Ascidian Homologs of Mammalian Thyroid Transcription Factor-1 Gene Are Expressed in the Endostyle

The endostyle is a special organ in the pharynx of urochordates, cephalochordates and cyclostomes. During evolution of the primitive chordates, the endostyle was organized in their common ancestor(s) with a shift to internal feeding for extracting suspended food from the water. In addition, the endostyle has an iodine-concentrating activity and is therefore thought to be functionally homologous...
